about

This is an English folk song collected by R. V. Williams in 1904 from Sussex, and published in The Penguin Book of English Folk Songs (1959). The lyrics are a lament of a woman for the abduction of her husband, who gets forced to join the navy and leave at once. I arranged it into a jazz ballad, taking two stanzas off the original lyrics. The pace suddenly changes to a fast, mambo-inspired coda that pushes the attention from a lament to the anxious feelings of the sailor, forced to confront against his will a possibly hostile and treacherous sea.

lyrics

All things are quite silent, each mortal at rest,
When me and my true love lay snug in one nest,
When a bold set of ruffians broke into our cave,
And they forced my dear jewel to plough the salt wave.

Through green fields and meadows we oft times have walked,
And sweet conversation of love we have talked,
With the birds in the woodland so sweetly did sing,
And the lovely thrushes' voices made the valleys to ring.
