The musical landscape of South Africa includes the musical traditions of Xhosa, Zulu, Sesotho and Swazi communities; moreover, this nation is also home to a popular jazz scene in its own right . After watching videos of Zulu Indlamu dances, I was impressed by how the rhythm was driving the performance to the point of being self-contained, and almost a melody in itself; I set out to write a theme where the rhythm part was more prominent and impactful than the melody. In the piece’s first theme, the main melody played by the piano is shadowed by the ostinato drumming and a second, rhythm-driven line played by the saxophone and the bass. The centre part is a homage to South African jazz-funk saxophonist Basil Coetzee (1944-1998).
