In between is inspired by the Javanese Gamelan. The piece opens with an introduction played by the piano on a scale similar to the traditional Slendro, reminiscent of Javanese Gamelan’s buka. Then, the piano plays the melody (balungan) while the sax and bass come in, respectively doubling the melody and playing the counter melody. The drums play free on the structure, in the style of Tony Williams, driving a free improvisation that then dissolves into a cloud of sound. From this introduction, the bass emerges with a theme in honour of Jaco Pastorius’s lyricism. In this surreal atmosphere, sax and bass play together in counterpoint until the drums and piano interrupt it and a fusion scene opens, inspired by Chick Corea’s “Light as a Feather”, before a more powerful return to the initial theme.
